We are grateful for the care and support the Kapiolani Breast Health Center has given to some of our very close friends and to so many other women in Hawaii. Excerpted from the Kapiolani Breast Center Website: The
Kapiolani Breast Center is the first dedicated breast center in Hawaii.
Dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer,
this beautiful state-of-the-art center fulfills Kapiolani's vision of
providing Hawaii's women with convenient coordinated healthcare and the
support to play an active role in their health.
The Kukui Children's Foundation is a group of organizations that are dedicated to providing services, assistance, and protection to children in need, especially those who have been or may be abused or harmed. A new center currently being renovated in downtown Honolulu will house the non-profits and provide a valuable space for foster youth, homeless children, immigrants, and children with learning disabilities, among others, to receive aid. Anyone wishing to directly help or donate to the new Kukui Children's Center may call 373-1224 or e-mail: kukuichildrensfoun@hawaii.rr.com. Articles from the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin have lots of information about the Kukui Children's Foundation and Center.
Recently, Kapiolani Women's Center has been given the green light to be the first PILOT program for an adult Beads of Courage in the U.S. Of course, we wanted to help them kick-start this wonderful program. Excerpted f rom the Beads of Courage Website Beads of Courage is a resilience-based intervention designed to support and strengthen the protective resources in children coping with serious illness. Through the program, children tell their story using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that commemorate milestones they have achieved along their unique treatment path. Ongoing evaluation of the Beads of Courage program indicates that the program helps to decrease illness-related distress, increase the use of positive coping strategies, helps children find meaning in illness, and restore s sense of self in children coping with serious illness. The program also provides something tangible the child can use to tell about their experience during cancer treatment and after.
