The Beauty of Black Beads

The Beauty of Black Beads

Did you know we carry over thirty kinds of black gemstone beads in the store? Most bead shops might have five or six. We have a slight obsession.

There's a reason black stones are so universally loved. Wearing black beads gives a feeling of safety, protection, and grounding. The color black is empowering — it connects you on the deepest level to feel secure in your body. And on a purely practical level, black goes with everything you own.

I've worn a black tourmaline stretchy cord bracelet almost every day for over a decade, to keep my energy clean and cleared of anything anyone could possibly leave behind. And yes, I truly believe it works for me — it keeps my spirits bright and shiny.

Here's a look at some of our favorites, and then the full list at the bottom.

The Protectors

If you're drawn to black stones for their shielding energy, start here.

Black Tourmaline — The gold standard for energetic protection. It's the stone I wear every day, and it's the one we recommend most often in the store. It absorbs negative energy rather than deflecting it, which is why people who work around a lot of other people's emotions swear by it. Mohs 7-7.5, so it's tough enough for daily wear.

Onyx — The classic. Dense, smooth, takes a beautiful polish. Onyx has been used as a protective talisman for thousands of years across cultures. It's also one of the most versatile black beads for design — it pairs with literally everything.

Shungite — A carbon-based stone from Russia that's become hugely popular in the last few years. It's one of the only stones that contains fullerenes (a molecular form of carbon), and people use it for EMF protection and purification. Soft at Mohs 3.5-4, so treat it gently.

The Obsidian Family

We carry five varieties of obsidian — volcanic glass formed when lava cools rapidly. Each one has a different character.

  • Golden Obsidian — Black with a warm golden sheen. Connected to the solar plexus; people use it for willpower and confidence.
  • Rainbow Obsidian — Catch it in the right light and bands of purple, green, and gold appear. One of the most beautiful stones in the store, period.
  • Silver Sheen Obsidian — A cool, mirror-like flash. Quieter than rainbow but equally striking.
  • Snowflake Obsidian — Black with white crystal inclusions that look like snowflakes. Calming energy, and the patterns make every bead unique.
  • Ice Obsidian — A translucent, smoky variety that almost glows when backlit.

The Rare Finds

These are the stones people pick up and say, "What IS this?"

Black Aquamarine — Yes, it exists. A deeply saturated, nearly black variety of aquamarine that still shows flashes of deep blue-green in strong light. Unusual and beautiful.

Hypersthene — A silky, dark stone with a coppery or silvery sheen that shifts as you turn it. The name comes from the Greek for "over strength." It's a calming stone — people reach for it when they need to quiet mental noise and find clarity.

Tektite — Not technically from Earth. Tektites are natural glass formed when a meteorite impacts the ground, melting and flinging terrestrial rock into the air where it cools mid-flight. You're wearing a piece of cosmic history.

Black Star Diopside — Hold it under a single light source and a four-pointed star appears on the surface. That optical effect is called asterism, and it never gets old.

Pietersite — Sometimes called the "tempest stone." Swirling bands of blue, gold, and brown in a dark matrix. It looks like a storm captured in stone.

The Island Connection

Lava — This is Hawaii under your feet, cooled and shaped into beads. Lava stone is porous, which makes it perfect for essential oils — add a drop and it holds the scent all day. There's something grounding about wearing the stone of these islands.

Tahitian Pearl — Not technically black — they range from dark charcoal to peacock green to deep purple. Each one is natural color, never dyed. These are luxury, and they earn it.
