Rainbow scallop shells get their vibrant colors—ranging from purple and pink to yellow and orange—from special natural pigments in their shells. These pigments, called carotenoids and porphyrins, come from their diet and from their own body chemistry. When scallops feed, they filter tiny plants and algae from the water, which contain colorful pigments. Their bodies then use these pigments, combined with their genetics and the environment they live in, to produce beautifully colored shells. Each shell’s unique color and pattern is influenced by what the scallop eats, where it lives, and how its body grows.
