I spent an hour sorting through more than 200 tiny strands of ruby and rhodochrosite that I brought in for July. I kept only the best half—the strands with the most even shapes, consistent size calibration, and strongest color.

This mixed-color ruby strand moves from sweet pink through raspberry and rich burgundy. The natural range makes it especially fun for the gem-chain necklace featured in today’s email.

Wire-wrap them with 26-gauge wire to create delicate links for earrings or a bar necklace, add tiny gemstone drops to chain, or bind them to the front of a long leaf earwire.
