February Birthstone: Amethyst

February's birthstone is Amethyst, a beautiful purple quartz ranging from the lightest of violets, to a dark deep purple that can look almost black!  It's name comes from a greek origin "amethystos",  which can be translated as not drunk - since ancient Greeks believe that amethyst would protect from intoxication and hangovers :)

I just found a fun, random article about an amethyst crystal cavern found in Maine in 1992!  Check it out - it was pre-blog posting :)  And while looking for more entertaining amethyst facts, discovered that Leonardo da Vinci wrote that amethyst had the power to dissipate bad thoughts and to sharpen intelligence.  Hmmmm. Lastly, symbolising the devotion and supposed to encourage the celibacy, amethyst was strongly searched by churches in the Middle Ages. It was particularly considered as the stone of bishops who still wear it often.

"Its colour is as unique as it is seductive, though in fact this gemstone of all gemstones is said to protect its wearer against seduction."  Read more about amethyst and all of it's magical protective powers, as well as scientific tid-bits on how it's color treated at times, on International Colored Gemstone Association's post here!  It made me want to put some of my gems into my "easy bake" oven and experiment!

Energetically, amethyst has many healing powers, known as the “stone of spirituality and contentment.”  Its many uses include balancing inner forces, bestowing strength and energy, aiding meditation, bringing tranquility of mind, obtaining knowledge and insight, and protecting from attack.  A stone for spiritual protection and purification. Aids in curbing overindulgence and giving up bad habits. Helps create an energetic “shield” to ward off negativity. Brings calm and clarity where there is anxiety and confusion.

Wear this in meditation, to assist with sleep, self-reflection and thinking.  It's a great stone to assist with studying!

Amethyst is a great stone to assist with focus and intelligence, so keep one close when studying!
