Tanzanite is pleochroic. There are different colors you can see in different crystal directions: red-violet, deep blue and yellow-green. Most are heat-treated to remove the yellow-green and make it more blue-violet.
Cool lighting --like daylight equivalent fluorescent --will emphasize tanzanite's blue, while warm lighting --like incandescent --will make it appear more violet-to-purple. LUCKY WE LIVE IN HAWAII cause the warm sun lighting brings out the purple like crazy!!!
