ʻŌhiʻa Lehua are native to Hawaii and very precious to the culture. Native Hawaiians used the wood for buildings, statues, and poi pounding boards, and they used the blossoms for medicine. Even though the flowers (which can bloom in various shades of red, yellow, and white) look delicate, ʻōhiʻa lehua can grow in extremely challenging environments, including areas recently covered by lava!

However, since ʻōhiʻa lehua are endemic to Hawaii, they have no defenses against non-native disease. Many ʻōhiʻa lehua have sickened and died from an imported fungal disease, so please take care when hiking near ʻōhiʻa lehua!
